Think about artificial turf and you probably picture a sports pitch of some kind. But you can also use this stuff to create lawns for homes or commercial spaces as well.
As you’ll appreciate, this man-made surface is designed to look like natural grass. It’s typically made from synthetic fibres such as nylon, polypropylene or polyethylene, fixed on to a backing material.
But you may not realise just how many benefits artificial grass can potentially offer, or even that it could be an option for your own garden. Here, we look at the main pros, allowing you to make an informed decision.
Artificial grass benefits
- It’s low maintenance: Obviously, you don’t have to mow, reseed, water or fertilise ‘grass’ like this, nor does it need anything in the way of pest control. All of these activities can be time-consuming, not to mention expensive. Just give your fake grass the occasional sweep and rinse to keep debris like leaves at bay – you should notice the difference on your water bills as well.
- It’s hardwearing: Synthetic lawns resist wear and tear incredibly well, and won’t fade or discolour. They can last up to 15 years, given that they’re not affected by extreme weather conditions. This turf doesn’t dry out in the sun or get swamped by the rain, for example.
- Appearance is consistent: Text and colour are uniform across your ‘lawn’. There are no dry or yellow patches, or weeds pushing up through the blades of grass, so you enjoy a green lawn all year round.
- Environmental impact: An artificial lawn can be gentle on the planet thanks to the way it reduces the use of water and pesticide or fertiliser run-off. (However, environmental impact also includes aspects such as the manufacturing process, how you dispose of the fake lawn at the end of its life, and infill materials.)
- Good drainage: Small holes drain water from the surface of your artificial grass, so you clear rain or spillages from a paddling pool. This minimises the potential for slip-and-trip accidents.
- Lack of allergy problems: According to the charity Allergy UK, hay fever affects around one in four UK adults. It can make being outdoors a misery for some in the summer. But it’s an issue you completely eliminate with artificial grass.
- Cleaner for kids and pets: If you have children or pets, you’ll be well aware that playing or running around outside can result in muddy paw prints, grass-stained clothes and so on. With artificial grass in place, pets and little ones can run around happily and safely, and they, their clothes and your home will stay spotless.
