In the UK, gardens evolve over time, as they do anywhere else. And if you’re wondering what direction to take your outdoor space in during 2026, we’re here to help with some inspiration.
In the new year, it looks as though things could be less about novelty and more about forging deeper connections with the soil and nature. Think natural shapes, plentiful rows of bulbs and perennials and wilder textures. Consider how you could create nuanced colour transitions with the seasons ahead.
So you could feel inspired to make a space that doesn’t just look good; it does good as well. Flowering bulbs to feed early-arriving bees, pollinator-friendly species and long-living perennials could all top your list if that’s the way you want to go. Rainwater collection, wildlife-friendly planting and compost points can be designed in to your garden plans, rather than being mere afterthoughts. Equally, you may want to have a border that’s a mini-ecosystem rather than simply a show of flowers.
Brilliant bulbs
At the same time, you may feel inspired to use bulbs creatively. And you don’t have to plant them in rigid rows. Consider weaving them through your borders, layering them or placing them between perennials to get a more eye-catching and dynamic end result. And while tulips, daffs and lilies are all still staples, think about less usual forms and colours, from pinks and copper to almost-black species. Or make the most of varieties which flower late in the spring, and still look gorgeous and maintain momentum into the summer.
If time is quite tight but you still want everything to come into bloom at once, bulbs are great for multiple planting, plus they’re low-maintenance.
Perennials take centre stage
Many gardeners are shifting towards durable, low-input styles in which long-lasting plants create a border’s backbone. Plant not only for flowers but also for movement and texture: think echinacea, hosta, verbena and perhaps some ornamental grasses.
Given our less predictable weather patterns now, these and other species can handle varied conditions while being very satisfying to grow. Perennials ultimately save water and effort and, once established, there’s very minimal replanting to do each year, so it’s a highly sustainable way of gardening. Climate-smart solutions like this are likely to be big news next year.
Let go of your overly tidy garden
It can be inspirational to consider that not every inch of your outdoor space needs to be perfect. Indeed, you can add personality and a more authentic look with a few imperfections. Think about texture and contrast plus the colour of leaves as well as flowers. Let plants mingle with each other and naturally self-seed.
