Landscaping is the process of designing and creating an attractive, functional outdoor space. It incorporates varied elements from plants and structures to hardscape features – i.e. the man-made elements of a garden. So landscaping encompasses patios, fountains, decking, pergolas, driveways, walkways, retaining walls and so on.
If you’re thinking of making significant changes to your outside space, you may think that summer would be the best time to get this work done. But, in fact, there are myriad reasons why the autumn and winter are actually ideal seasons to landscape your garden.
Here are some reasons to landscape your garden in the winter:
- It causes less disruption
Major works are not without disruption, since some jobs simply can’t be done without extra labour, plus some dust, noise and heavy machinery. It therefore makes perfect sense to have this going on at a time of year when you’re tucked up indoors and not outside enjoying your garden – your neighbours may well thank you, too!
- Easier to book
It can be quite challenging to book a landscape gardener during the warmer months, when everyone wants work done. In winter, in contrast, your landscaper of choice is far likelier to have availability on your preferred dates – and they’ll be able to start work sooner, without having to put you on a waiting list, so that you’re ready to enjoy your open-air space come the spring and summer.
- Better for hard landscaping
Keen on installing a new patio, decking or similar? The truth is that, to make your dream a reality, some type of excavation work is likely to be needed. And because rain is more likely during the winter and autumn, the ground is softer and so easier to work with, meaning the job can be done more simply and quickly.
- The garden is dormant
Because plants are dormant in the colder seasons, it makes it easier to view the overall structure of your garden and plan any big changes you wish to make. Additionally, post-completion, there’ll be more time for grass to regrow and foliage to return for spring and summer, when you’ll be keen to get back out into the garden. If you landscape during the winter, there will also be less stress on the vegetation, plus it’s easier to source and plant bare-root plants like hedges, fruit trees and rose bushes at this time of year.
